February Monthly Meeting - Tuesday Feb. 23rd. 7:00 pm

Biodiesel Use in Aviation

Boeing is doing research and performing tests of biodiesel use in aviation.  The Department of Defense is also doing research and performing tests in aviation use of biodiesel.  What is the status and when can we expect to have our flight to New York fueled with biodiesel?

Boeing’s Darrin Morgan, Director, Sustainable Biofuels Strategy for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, will speak about the use of biodiesel in aviation.  Darrin leads strategy development and execution for Boeing Commercial Airplanes' Sustainable Aviation Fuels Program.  In addition, Darrin is a co-founder of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group, whose members account for more than 15 percent of global jet fuel demand and whose goal is to diversify aviation's fuel supply, while also reducing the industry's lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, he has served as co-chairman of the world's first global algae-for-energy trade association, the Algal Biomass Organization and on the National Academies of Science Transportation Review Board Panel on alternative fuels integration.

Darrin is at the forefront of biodiesel use and research in aviation.  This is a unique opportunity to learn about biodiesel use in aviation, and Boeing's leadership in this field.  Get your questions answered!  7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Seattle Phinney Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N, Seattle WA 98103. Cost is Free.  Information at www.nwbiodiesel.org/.

Biodiesel 101/Homebrewing

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Want to brew your own biodiesel at home?  Is it safe?  What do you need?  What about byproducts of the process?  Where can I learn how to do it?  Where do I get waste vegetable oil?  What are the basics of biodiesel?

Who better to answer these and other questions than BioLyle.  Lyle Rudensey, aka "BioLyle," is the owner of BioLyle's Biodiesel Workshop, LLC, and has given presentations on biodiesel processing to students of all ages, businesses, and community organizations throughout the Puget Sound region.  His popular homebrewing workshop is now available on DVD.  For more information go to: www.biolyle.com or www.biolyle.blogspot.com

Get your questions answered!  7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Seattle Phinney Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N, Seattle WA 98103. Cost is Free.  Information at www.nwbiodiesel.org/.

October 27th Monthly Meeting: Sustainable Biodiesel

What: NW Biodiesel Network Monthly Meeting – “Sustainable Biodiesel” presentation & discussion
Where: Phinney Neighborhood Association (www.pna.org)
When: 10/27/09; 7-9pm
Topic Details:

Many biodiesel foes rail about the food vs. fuel.  Biodiesel can and is being made sustainably.  Many focus on biodiesel made from soy and canola oil.  They fail to understand that the cops are grown as animal feed so people can enjoy their steaks and pork chops.  The oil is a byproduct of this primary purpose of the crop.

Feedstocks that avoid this controversy completely are waste vegetable oil/tallow, biomass and algae.

Yale Wong, CEO of General Biodiesel, will talk about using waste vegetable oil/tallow to produce biodiesel.  Kelly Ogilvie, CEO of Blue Marble Energy, will address producing energy from biomass and algae.  Kelly will also address where we are with Algae and when we can expect it as a feedstock for biodiesel production.  We look forward to Yale and Kelly updating us on the exciting recent developments that are taking place at their companies.  Come join us and get your questions answered!

September Monthly Meeting: "True Cost of Biodiesel" (Tues, 9/22)

What: NW Biodiesel Network Monthly Meeting – “True Costs of Biodiesel” talk
Where: Phinney Neighborhood Association
When: 7-9pm
Topic Details:

Are you considering switching to Biodiesel, but concerned about the cost?  And what about the "true cost" of this alternative fuel, to the environment, your health, and our economy?

Join us for a talk with Greg Rock (Co-founder of the Green Car Company) to address these questions and others addressing the costs involved with BD.

This will be an interactive evening, as we do not plan to have a long presentation. The intent is to cover actual fuel cost, lifecycle costs (production, inputs, outputs, companion costs), health benefits/$avings, and environmental benefits/$avings including carbon emissions, pollution, economy, etc. as time allows. One quick example is how the use of biodiesel for marine applications can potentially avoid costs due to petroleum based oil spills. How would one calculate this?  Another important aspect we will discuss is how different biodiesel feedstocks affect the costs and benefits.  We will also have several NW BD board members on hand to aid in the discussion.

Come learn, participate, contribute!
